About OASIS SEMI P39
OASIS Improvements over GDSII
  • Squeeze out all wasted bits and redundant records.
  • Support two-dimensional figure arrays
  • Support vertical and horizontal trapezoid primitives
  • Support step-and-repeat figure description
  • Relax 16- and 32-bit integer restrictions
  • Use variable-width integers (8-64 bits)
  • Allow relative (Dx,Dy) coordinates in both step/repeat & figures
  • Relax restrictions on string length, including cell names
  • Relax restrictions on number of polygon vertices
  • Use IEEE standard 64-bit floating point numbers
  • Support layer name & purpose information
  • Support arbitrary named properties, integer & floating values
  • Support embedded comments
  • Support Block-level compression

OASIS (Open Artwork Systems Interchange Standard) is the successor to the layout format GDSII. It is a standard, SEMI P39 that is administered by the standards and trade organization, SEMI, San Jose. The standard must be purchased. The link above will help with its purchase.

To the right is a list of improvements that had been considered and have been implemented by the OASIS Working Group. The OASIS Working Group is an all-volunteer team. SEMI hosts the Group's meetings. Typically, they're held at SEMI headquarters in the United States or Japan.  The meetings can be attended via SEMI's teleconferencing capabilities as well.

SEMI administers the standard including the formalized balloting of proposed changes to the new format. The Chair of the OASIS Working Group is Thomas Grebinski. Click on the above request for information. You'll be added to the OASIS Working Group e-mail list. The Group meets on an as-needed basis.

The greatest advantages that OASIS has over GDSII are its ability to compact integrated circuit design layout data by 10-50x and the release of its 16- and 32-bit limitations to X-bit. At this time, the industry is moving to 64-bit.
